Special Edition: Character Sketches
05 Jan 2008

I’ve always loved the formality of introductions . . . when done properly. The Brits rule in this area. Witness the scene in Bridget Jones’ Diary when Mark Darcy introduces Miss Jones by saying, “Bridget works in publishing and used to play naked in my paddling pool.” This is far more intriguing than, “Mr. Smith, allow me to introduce Bridget Jones.”

With that thought in mind, it is a great honor to introduce the characters of my Regency-set Historical series. A Dangerous Beauty is on shelves now (Rosamunde & Luc’s story). The Kiss (Georgiana and Quinn’s story) will be released February 26, 2008.

May I present to you from A Dangerous Beauty:

Merceditas “Ata” St. Aubyn, the Dowager Duchess of Helston—a 4’11” ball of fire who likes nothing better than arranging the future happiness of everyone except herself. Her second favorite occupation is interrupting insufferable people. She is often wrong but never in doubt—except when it concerns Armagnac, a delightful French elixir.

Rosamunde Langdon is the dangerous beauty who prefers the silent language of flowers over blatant flirtation with gentlemen. She has lost everything and has sworn never to give into adventure and temptation again. She is often in doubt but never wrong—except when it concerns the devilish Duke of Helston.

Luc St. Aubyn, The Duke of Helston is a mysterious naval war hero with a penchant for wordplay but a strong aversion to flowers, especially those found in bridal bouquets. He earned his moniker, Lord Fire & Ice, by exuding blistering passion at night and ice the morning after. He is never, ever wrong and never, ever in doubt—except when it concerns his own future happiness.

Mr. John Brown is Luc’s mentor and Ata’s long suffering Scottish gentleman friend. He’s secretly courted the dowager for nearly five decades without success and at this rate it’ll be another fifty years before she condescends to kiss him. He is the only one in the group who is always right but kind enough not to rub anyone’s nose in it—except at the end of the story.

Grace Sheffey, Georgiana Wilde, Sarah Winters, and Elizabeth Ashburton are all the other members of Ata’s club. One is a secret marchioness, another is a well-known countess, the next is a war widow, while the last holds a secret. Oh dear, I believe the order is a bit jumbled. I’m usually never wrong—except when I introduce too many people.

And now a sneak peek at the two main characters from The Kiss:

A steward’s daughter, Georgiana Wilde is a woman who loves lists. And plans. And organization. Actually, there is one thing she loves more and that would be Quinn Fortesque, a man she has lusted after in secret her entire life. She is always in doubt and almost always wrong. How can one of the bravest ladies alive be such a coward in love’s arena?

Quinn Fortesque, the newest Marquis of Ellesmere is a famed diplomat who oozes charm and sophistication. Doubts? Errors? You must be joking. But there is something about his re-encounter with his childhood friend, Georgiana which melts his coolly, guarded heart. And it all begins . . . with just one kiss.

One of my very favorite magazines of all time, Victoria Magazine, will return to the publishing world this week. Starting to write a new book!
01 Oct 2007

Here in Maryland, the leaves are turning fantastic shades of burgandy and gold, the children are firmly entrenched in school, the edits are almost complete for The Kiss (out Feb. 26) and I have officially run out of reasons not to start writing the next book in the Widows Club series! In truth, this is one of my favorite moments in the creation of a novel. The ideas are flying around my head like beautiful, fragile butterflies just beyond my reach. I know there will be a tough journey ahead - many mistakes, backtracking, rewrites, etc. There will be a gut-wrenching moment when I realize my butterfly net is filled with gaping holes or non-existant. But on the rare days when I write a small line of dialogue that works, or a scene that pleases me, I know I will sense the butterflies have turned into faeries who are whispering lines in my ear. And that makes it all worthwhile. Happy October, everyone!

Lovely Chicago Tribune review!
13 Jun 2007

This just in . . .

Eight years ago a scandalous kiss with the duke of Helston's heir nearly ruined Rosamunde Baird's life; ever since, Rosamunde has vowed to never again let passion rule her life. Now a widow, Rosamunde receives an unexpected invitation from the dowager duchess of Helston to join the duchess' Widow's Club. While staying with the duchess, Rosamunde meets Luc St. Aubyn, the new duke of Helston, and despite her best intentions, Rosamunde finds herself tempted by Luc's kisses.

Richly emotional and lusciously sensual, 'A Dangerous Beauty' is simply superb. –John Charles for The Chicago Tribune

Lovely review for A Dangerous Beauty!
28 May 2007

Tomorrow is the official release of A Dangerous Beauty. Here's the latest pre-release review:

'A lovely and heartfelt historical romance! I fell in love with every facet of Luc’s unconventional behavior. He was the perfect match for Rosamunde, the ideal man and lover to help her return to the person she thought died long ago. Every page was emotionally engrossing as Rosamunde healed from the past and mends the rift between herself and her family. A Dangerous Beauty is the first book in Nash’s new series and, I predict, with her talents, another best seller!'

Dangerous Beauty the movie!
21 May 2007

Yes, there really is a movie with the same title as my May 29th release. And since I am addicted to movies, from time to time, I'll sprinkle a few movie and book reviews here. So make yourself a cup of Scandalbroth while I dish on two faves:

Dangerous Beauty: Catherine McCormack, Rufus Sewell, and Jacqueline Bisset star in this lush romantic story set in 16th century Venice. When the family of the man she loves is against their marriage, a dangerous beauty follows in the footsteps of her mother to become the most celebrated and beautiful courtesan of her day. Gorgeous sets and costumes. Very sensuous love scenes and a plot that will tug at your heartstrings. Rating: A (What? Did you think I'd give a movie that has the same title as my next book anything less?)

Casanova: Heath Ledger, Sienna Miller, and Jeremy Irons star is this romantic comedy set in Venice, Italy. When the legendary ladies’ man meets the love of his life, he faces rejection for the first time. Mistaken identities, absurd misadventures and endless good fun ensue when Casanova tries to win the heart of the one woman he can’t have. The Lard King from Genoa, played by Oliver Platt, stole every scene! And who knew nunneries saw so much action? Rating: A

Language of the Fan
22 Mar 2007

Looking at the cover of my upcoming June release, A Dangerous Beauty, I was reminded of the silent language of the fan which I had a lot of fun researching when I wrote Lord Will & Her Grace. 'Fanology” is facinating! Who knew opening and closing a fan could be so dangerous? Here is a list of gestures and their meanings taken from Fanology or Ladies’ Conversation Fan by Charles Francis Badini and published in 1797.

•Placing your fan near your heart = I love you.

•A closed fan resting on the right eye = When can I see you?

•A half closed fan pressed to the lips = You may kiss me.

•Touching the tip of the fan with a finger = I wish to speak to you.

•Letting the fan rest on the right cheek = Yes.

•Letting the fan rest on the left cheek = No.

•Dropping the fan = We will be friends.

•Fanning slowly = I am married.

•Fanning quickly = I am engaged.

•Carrying a open fan in the left hand = Come and talk to me.

•Twirling the fan in the right hand = I love another.

•Twirling the fan in the left hand = We are being watched.

•Shutting a fully open fan slowly = I promise to marry you.

•Drawing the fan across the eyes = I am sorry.

•To open a fan wide = Wait for me.

Paranormal Gems
22 Mar 2007

My favorite genre will always be Regency-era romance. That said I frequently delve into other genres especially when I’m on deadline and am writing about the nineteenth century all day/night long. The last couple of months I’ve been reading paranormals. Two stories which immediately hooked me into their dark worlds were J R Ward’s Lover Revealed and Alyssa Day’s Atlantis Rising.

J R Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series makes me want to kiss a vampire, smell that spicy bonding scent and get bitten. Alyssa Day’s debut is zooming up the USA Today lists and Waldenbook charts faster than you can say “Paranormal Goddess Extraordinaire.” Bravo!
